World Wide Web creator sorry for the '//' and other things that don't matter

source URL: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8306515.stm

The man who created the world wide web says the two oblique strokes in front of every website address are a bit of a mistake. How else is / used?

If Sir Tim Berners-Lee had his time again he'd probably leave // out.

Tenpin bowling
Tenpin bowlers use /

The two forward slashes at the start of URLs are pretty pointless, says the British scientist who is credited with being the architect of the world wide web.

Typing in // has just resulted in people overusing their index fingers, wasting time and using more paper, he has told a technology meeting in Washington.

But their inclusion has made the forward slash an everyday part of people's lives globally. Other than in website addresses, here are 10 ways / is used.

1. In tenpin bowling it is used in scoring to show a spare. This is when all of the pins have been knocked down after the second ball of a frame.

2. In Teelineshorthand, it is used instead of a full stop. And in Fraktur script, which dates back to the Middle Ages, a forward slash represents a comma.

3. In old money it is used to divide shillings and pence. So something that cost ten shillings and six pence could be written as 10/6.

4. / is the title of a novel by author Greg Bear. Published in 1997, it is also known as Slant.

A book
It's been a title of a book as well as used in them

5. When writing dates it is used as a delimiter. This is character or sequence of characters marking the beginning or end of a unit of data. So today's date would be written as 14/10/09.

6. In poems and plays it is used to indicate a line break when quoting multiple lines. For example "I had a dream, which was not all a dream/The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars", from Lord Byron's poem Darkness.

7. In NetHack, a 1987 video game, a forward slash is the symbol for a wand.

8. US government department names can be abbreviated using it. For example the Department of Defense, International Security Affairs is DOD/ISA.

9. It often replaces a hyphen to make clear a strong joint between words or phrases eg: Beyonce is a singer/actress.

10. But it can also represent "or" in instruction manuals and books.

Destiny

How long does it take to reflect on issues, situations before finally knowing what to do? What to expect? Have you ever felt the need to fast forward into the future to just know that one thing - one trigger point - then rewind back to the past to change that one moment in time that alters the course of your life?

Yes, I know plenty of us wants to do that, yet somehow or rather, that only happens in movies, or soap operas. What's also interesting to note is that almost everyone would want to go back to that one moment in time, where it could and would change that course in life. So what role does destiny plays in all this? If we can simply go back and forth to change the course of our life, then what is the point of "destiny".

Destiny is the choices you make. Not the chances you missed out. The array of choices you have ultimately determines the path in your life. Some people reflect back and think that destiny is the opportunities that comes your way - yet when you think back those opportunities comes with choices, and YOU decide which path you want to walk - or run! :)

Another aspect of destiny is how its reflected with the love of your life. I came across a saying on destiny and the one you love - Destiny is building a bridge towards the one you love. Even in love, you don't leave things as it is. You work towards it. It has never been a granted thing that happens easily as A, B, C. It's an effort you make, a choice you take... and live through.

In the Quran Chapter 30, Verse 21: "And of His Signs is that He created mates for you from yourselves that you might find peace of mind in them, and He put between you love and compassion."

Sweet Dreams
by: Beyonce

(Turn The Lights On)

Every night I rush to my bed
With hopes that maybe Ill get a chance to see you
When i close my eyes
Im going out of my head
Lost in a fairytale
Can you hold my hands and be my guide

Clouds filled with stars cover your skies
And I hope it rains
Youre the perfect lullaby
What kinda dream am is this?

You could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
My guilty pleasure I ain't going no where
Baby long as you're here
Ill be floating on air cause you're my
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you

I mention you when I say my prayers
I wrap you around around all of my thoughts
Boy you're my temporary high
I wish that when I wake up youre there
To wrap your arms around me for real
And tell me youll stay by side

Clouds filled with stars cover your skies
And I hope it rains
Youre the perfect lullaby
What kinda dream is this

You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
My guilty pleasure I ain't going no where,
Baby long as you're here
Ill be floating on air cause you're my
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you

Tattoo your name across my heart
So it will remain
Not even death can make us part
What kind of dream is this?

You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you
Sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Somebody pinch me, your love's too good to be true
My guilty pleasure I ain't going no where
Baby long as you're here
Ill be floating on air cause you're my,
You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare
Either way I, don't wanna wake up from you

Obama Quotes

I like reading through quotes. It's either inspirational, thought-provoking or downright funny... Here's some on Obama. Enjoy!

_____________________________________

A good compromise, a good piece of legislation, is like a good sentence; or a good piece of music. Everybody can recognize it. They say, 'Huh. It works. It makes sense.'

Al Qaeda is still a threat. We cannot pretend somehow that because Barack Hussein Obama got elected as president, suddenly everything is going to be OK.

America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.

Americans... still believe in an America where anything's possible - they just don't think their leaders do.

As a nuclear power - as the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon - the United States has a moral responsibility to act.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

Community colleges play an important role in helping people transition between careers by providing the retooling they need to take on a new career.

Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.

I can make a firm pledge, under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.

I cannot swallow whole the view of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator.

I consider it part of my responsibility as President of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear.

I don't care whether you're driving a hybrid or an SUV. If you're headed for a cliff, you have to change direction. That's what the American people called for in November, and that's what we intend to deliver.

I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war.

I don't take a dime of their [lobbyist] money, and when I am president, they won't find a job in my White House.

I found this national debt, doubled, wrapped in a big bow waiting for me as I stepped into the Oval Office.

I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we've struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions.

I opposed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. It should be repealed and I will vote for its repeal on the Senate floor. I will also oppose any proposal to amend the U.S. Constitution to ban gays and lesbians from marrying.

I think it is important for Europe to understand that even though I am president and George Bush is not president, Al Qaeda is still a threat.

I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody.

I will cut taxes - cut taxes - for 95 percent of all working families, because, in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle class.

Life quotes... or revelation???!!

I woke up today, slightly late than usual. Sleepy... so sue me??!! Anyway, today felt different from any other day - especially I guess since today at work things are perking up! And it's also a few days till Eid Mubarak..

Sometimes I know my friends think I overthink too much... I question too much... When they said that, I reflect back that yes it's true... I do think too much, I do question too much and I do want too much. But if I didnt do that it wouldnt be me, would it? That is what makes me ME. I do enjoy my time with family, friends and others. Yet, there is a part of me that will always question things. That curiosity that most people would say killed the cat... So??? If I'm not curious, I wouldnt be me. Right?? :)

Anyway, while doing work, I came across a few quotes that i felt was interesting to note down for future reference...

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day."
-E.B. White-

My take on this is that this is definitely one of those thought provoking quotes. Yes, we do wake up wanting to make a difference and make the world a better place... Yet at the same time, we do want to experience life and enjoy our time in it. Would one overshadow the other? How do you come to a decision which is which? Today you make the world a better place?? Tomorrow you enjoy it? Hmm.... one of those things that will haunt my mind for sometime before I would be able to sort it out...

"I have a simple philosophy: Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches."
-Alice Roosevelt Longworth-

This is a simple and straight forward one. Yet, can easily fit into any situation as smoothly as A, B, C... A wealth of meanings in those few lines, that is adaptable and focus specific to any person as well...

And coming up with the best of all by Robert Frost

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."

Well, that's my take for the day... I'll try and update with more writings... InsyaAllah

The Way I Am - Ingrid Michealson

If you were falling, then I would catch you
You need a light, I'd find a match

Cuz I love the way you say good morning
And you take me the way I am

If you are chilly, here take my sweater
Your head is aching; I'll make it better

Cuz I love the way you call me baby
And you take me the way I am

I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair
Sew on patches to all you tear

Cuz I love you more than I could ever promise
And you take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
You take me the way I am
